Project Spotlight
County of Ventura Airports Camarillo and Oxnard Noise Studies
Ventura County Department of Airports is updating the Part 150 Noise Compatibility Study for both Camarillo and Oxnard Airports. This update is done in partnership with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and funded through an FAA grant. The study will update Noise Exposure Maps for each airport.
What is Part 150 Study?
Measures current and future aircraft noise levels around the airport.
Identifies ways to reduce aircraft noise impacts through changes in operations or airport facilities.
Promotes land uses that are more compatible with airport noise (like commercial or industrial areas).
Suggest methods to lessen noise impacts on existing homes.
Sets up a process to review and update the program over time.
Lays the groundwork for future studies on noise and air quality improvements.
Based on community feedback, the County has since launched an Approach and Procedure Analysis Study at Camarillo Airport, which we are also helping to lead. This study looks at how aircraft fly into and out of the airport under instrument flight rules to find ways to further reduce noise.
It includes technical evaluations, input from aviation experts, public and stakeholder meetings, and coordination with the FAA.
Milestones:
Held three to four rounds of meetings per study with advisory committee members and the public to share updates, review recommendations, and discuss next steps.
Hosted extensive Q&A sessions — often lasting late into the evening — to make sure every question and comment was addressed.
Challenges:
Working closely with airport staff, technical teams, and the community to ensure residents, groups, and tenants feel heard — even when their questions go beyond the scope of the studies.
Ensuring everyone understands the study goals, timeline, and how their input helps shape potential airspace improvements.
